“GREAT TIDE” OF 1966: COMMITTEE SET UP TO REMEMBER THE 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF THE ASSOCIAZIONE PIAZZA SAN MARCO
The fifty year anniversary of the flood that violently struck all of the North-East and hit Venice with an exceptional high tide of 194 cm above the average sea level will fall on 4 November 2016. A dramatic moment for Venice and its islands, which must not be forgotten. The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has therefore set up a committee for the occasion ‘so that even the youngest know about the episode of the “great tide”’. Those who took part in the induction of the technical forum set up to propose an honorary committee and anticipate the activities in the metropolitan area, as the Nuova Venezia reported, were: the chairman of the Biennale Paolo Baratta, the rector of Ca’ Foscari Michele Bugliesi, the chairman of Fai Francesca Barbini, the superintendent Emanuela Carpani, the superintendent of the Fenice Cristiano Chiarot, the chairman of the Querini Marino Cortese, the director of Rai Regione Giovanni De Luca, the rector of Iuav Alberto Ferlenga, the chairman of the Musei civici Mariacristina Gribaudi, the director of the Marciana Maurizio Messina, Don Dino Pistolato of the patriarchate, Amerigo Restucci (coordinator of activities), the director of the Archivio di Stato Raffaele Santoro and Anna Luiza Thompson-Flores, director of the Unesco regional office. It must be noted that the Associazione Piazza San Marco and We Are Here Venice support the initiative together with Fai. Our association intensely wished to take part in this event, recalling how it has for some time been involved in raising public awareness of the serious problems that the high tides cause in the most beautiful drawing room in the world, an astonishing drawing room that even with the Sistema Mose in operation will be regularly flooded even with low to medium high tides.
