‘VENICE BEFORE VENICE. AT THE ORIGINS OF AN IDENTITY’: CYCLE OF CONFERENCES AT THE BIBLIOTECA NAZIONALE MARCIANA
The Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in St Mark’s Square will host a cycle of important conferences on the origins of Venice from today until 16 May 2013. ‘Venezia prima di Venezia. Alle origini di un’identità - Venice before Venice. At the origins of an identity’ is the title of the cycle of meetings starting today, 28 February, at 5 pm, coordinated by Lorenzo Braccesi, who will speak on ‘Come i Greci vedevano i Veneti - How the Greeks saw the Veneti’. On Thursday 14 March Maddalena Bassani (Padua University) and Marco Molin (Centro Studi Torcellani) will speak on ‘Venezia prima di Venezia. La realtà di Torcello - Venice before Venice. Torcello’. On Thursday 21 March Giovannella Cresci Marrone and Lorenzo Calvelli will talk about ‘Romanità Lagunare. La voce delle iscrizioni e degli autori antichi - Lagoon romanitas. The voice of ancient authors and inscriptions’. Thursday 11 April Alessandro Asta (Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Veneto) will speak on ‘Tutela del patrimonio archeologico lagunare - Protecting the lagoon archaeological heritage’. The final date is on 16 May with ‘Le origini di Venezia nella cronachistica veneziana: la memoria fittizia dell’aristocrazia lagunare - The origins of Venice in Venetian chronicles: the false memory of the lagoon aristocracy’, presented by Antonio Carile (Bologna University). All the meetings will start at 5 pm and be held in the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. The series of meetings has been organised by the Centro Studi Torcellani, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana and the Ministry of Culture, with contributions from the Veneto Regional Administration, the Venice Murano Burano Municipality and the Centro Studi per l’Archeologia dell’Adriatico.
