CAFFE’ FLORIAN: RESTORATION WORKS COMPLETED ON THE ‘ROOM OF ILLUSTRIOUS MEN’
The restoration works on the 19th-century ‘Room of Illustrious Men’ at the historic Caffè Florian in St Mark’s Square were completed by the set date. The faces of Palladio, Sarpi, Morosini, Benedetto Marcello, Enrico Dandolo, Carlo Goldoni, Pietro Orseolo, Marco Polo, Vettor Pisani and Titian now grace the walls of the room thanks to the careful restoration directed by the architect Barbara Pastor and the restorer Andrea Libralesso. As may be easily appreciated, they are the faces of those who made the history of the city. The cost of the works was 200,000 euros. Marco Paolini, managing director of the historic cafè, told the local press with great satisfaction that ‘we had no public support despite the room being state property. We took on the work in any case for our customers’.
