EUROPE DAY 2016
Europe Day returns again this year, a big event involving the lagoon city. There is a rich programme of events, exhibitions and meetings dedicated to the European Union and its values to encourage more aware European citizenship. The event is intended to recall the two most significant historic dates for Europe: 5 May 1949, foundation of the European Council with the Treaty of London, and 9 May 1950, that of the European Union with the ‘Schuman declaration’ on the occasion of the Paris speech. The event, the result of cooperation between the Comune di Venezia - Europe Direct, European Council - Venice Office, European Parliament - Information Office in Italy, European Commission - Representation in Italy, proposes highlighting the ‘European vocation’ of the lagoon city as a place of reflection on Europe.
But this year, unlike previous years, the historic cafes in St Mark’s Square will not be involved. Only a Discussion Panel will be held on Thursday 12 May on the book ‘Citizens of Europe, culture e diritti’ at 4 pm in the prestigious European Council offices in the Procuratie vecchie, San Marco 180/c.
