Piazza San Marco gets ready for the invasion of runners

A good 7000 runners in the marathon and a further 6000 doing the ten kilometres will have the honour of running through one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Once again on Sunday 28 October Piazza San Marco will host the Venice Marathon, now in its 33rd year. The competition will start in Stra and end on the Riva degli Schiavoni, passing through Piazza San Marco, which, as always, will be the most fascinating moment of the entire course. A record race connecting more than eighty towns, which will follow an event that has now become a major sporting appointment. There will thus be about 13,000 athletes from 67 countries and as many as 15,000 volunteers, including the police forces, who will supervise this historic international competition. We noted that one of the most beautiful aspects that has always attracted runners from all over the world is the section through the old city centre and, especially, the Piazza, which greets all the sports people as always immersed in its splendour. So for once the Piazza San Marco will make the news thanks to the colours of the runners and so be at the centre of international sport.
