RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS AT THE MANET EXHIBITION IN THE DOGE’S PALACE
RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS AT THE MANET EXHIBITION IN THE DOGE’S PALACE
In a very crowded Venice and a St Mark’s Square full of tourists, due partly to the Art Biennale that continues to attract thousands of visitors, it must be noted that the big exhibition on Edouard Manet at the Doge’s Palace has won first place in the ANSA classifications of the most visited exhibitions, surpassing Titian at the Scuderia del Quirinale in Rome, which moves into second place. So finally we can talk not about badly sited ‘sheds’ or advertising banners in St Mark’s Square, but about a cultural record. For example, the week of 30 May to 5 June saw a record number of visitors (a good 21,441 with a daily average of 3,063) for this event, which for the first time brings together in Italy the masterpieces of the great French master and puts them into dialogue with Veneto painting. It is a virtuous example of how to combine art and tourism in Venice and above all in the St Mark’s area. The exhibition is open until 18 August.
