ST MARK’S SQUARE: DETERIORATION OF THE PAVING AND TRACHYTE FLAGSTONES
Numerous Venetians, the shopkeepers in St Mark’s Square and, recently, Enrico Tantucci in the La Nuova Venezia newspaper, have complained about the deterioration of the paving in St Mark’s Square. Istrian stone strips broken, flagstones cracked, marble drain covers and drains subsided. The world’s drawing room is losing pieces and no one is taking any action. Maintenance has been stopped due to a lack of finance but the situation continues to deteriorate. Since the end of Carnival and the related events in the square, the precarious state of the flagstones and paving in general has become more obvious. Action by the city council is needed, but it has already advised that there is no money. The increase in the frequency of high tides has certainly also contributed to the damage and, as known, the Associazione Piazza San Marco has published a bulky Dossier on this, loudly calling for works to maintain, rebuild and waterproof the Square.
