STARS IN THE LAGOON, OBSERVATION OF THE SKY FROM ST MARK’S SQAURE

On Saturday 9 November from 7 pm it will be possible to observe the stars and the moon with various telescopes in St Mark’s Square. ‘Stelle in Laguna’ (Stars in the Lagoon) is a wonderful event organised by the Venice city council’s environmental office (Servizio Educazione Ambientale e Municipalità Venezia Murano Burano) with local astrophile clubs and associations and is part of a cycle of meetings on light pollution and the exploration of the universe. The aim is to invite the public to think about the question of light pollution and the importance of not losing the sense of research and wonder inspired by observation of the sky. The appointment to turn off the lights and turn on the stars is in St Mark’s Square, in the area around the Todaro column, Doge’s Palace, from 7 pm. The city council will reduce the lighting in the square for the occasion, making the setting even more evocative. About ten telescopes will be available for those attending who, guided by astrophiles, (Circolo Astrofili G. Ruggieri, Associazione Astrofili Veneziani, Associazione Astrofili Veneti), will be able to observe the moon and the main stars in the sky.
