THE 2016 VENICE CARNIVAL READY TO GO: ST MARK’S SQUARE ONCE AGAIN THE MAIN STAGE OF THE FESTIVAL

The 2016 Venice Carnival starts tomorrow, dedicated to trades, culture and the city’s craftsmen, as both the mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro and the artistic director of the event Marco Maccapani have confirmed several times. The organisers also aim to encourage Venetians to ‘celebrate’ their Carnival and also come back to the Square. From tomorrow until 9 February St Mark’s Square will no longer host the Gran Teatro, but trades and craftsmen will be coming. Stonemasons, mask makers, shoemakers, oar makers and boat builders will be there. The St Mark’s area will go back to being the heart of Venetian life and its traditions. The mayor, Mr Brugnaro, and the director, Mr Maccapani, have emphasised the ‘numerous events and shows that will bring the hidden culture back to life and the city closer to the world’.
