THE CITY COUNCIL PASSES THE RESOLUTION: ALL CLEAR FOR THE SAN MARCO GUARDIANS

The Venice city council yesterday passed the resolution allowing it to work with the Associazione San Marco for a second year and authorising eight men and women to provide a service of control and information for all visitors to St Mark’s Square. The ‘San Marco Guardians’ will be engaged from Monday 20 May 2013 and, wearing an easily recognisable uniform, will patrol the Square, also offering tourists general indications on the appropriate behaviour in these historic and monumental places. This is a very important project that was a great success last summer and is being proposed again thanks partly to the fundamental sponsorship of Costa Crociera. The main task of the Guardians will once again be to advise people not to have picnics on the steps of the Procuratie, not to feed the pigeons and not to mistake the waterfront for a beach. In conclusion, the Guardians will stop tourists with the weapon of a smile and instructions, to indicate ‘improper’ behaviour and to give historic information on the square and offer directions. It is a service that, as hoped by the Associazione Piazza San Marco last year, will once again be resumed this summer, which is just around the corner.
