THE COMITATI PER VENEZIA: PASS TO GO INTO ST MARK’S SQUARE AND ITS SURROUNDS

A request to act against the mass tourism that endangers the very survival of the city was formally expressed at the annual meeting of the Comitati internazionali per la salvaguardia di Venezia, held yesterday under the auspices of Unesco at Palazzo Loredan. The Comune di Venezia was asked to act as soon as possible to regulate the tourist flows in the city at certain times of the year and to protect the St Mark’s area invaded by thousands of tourists. The introduction of a pass was called for allowing access to the Square and surrounding areas identified as: the Piazzetta dei leoncini, the Procuratie, the jetty and the quay from the Zecca to the Hotel Danieli. The chairman of the Comitati Umberto Marcello del Majno (in photo) pointed out that the Comitati do not opt for any specific plan, but urge the Comune to deal with the problem quickly and not put it off. Another appeal to be noted was that of the fight against wave motion, another serious city problem that closely affects the St Mark’s basin and the Riva degli Schiavoni.
