THE PHENOMENON OF EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH TIDES RETURNS TO THE CITY AND ST MARK’S SQUARE AS IT DOES EVERY AUTUMN

The exceptionally high tide phenomenon in Venice has occurred again as it does every autumn. Yesterday the tide reached a maximum height of 105 cm above sea level at 9.25 in the morning. This was a moderate tide, but it went out very slowly due to the strong easterly wind and there were difficulties in some parts of the city all the same, especially in the St Mark’s area. St Mark’s Square was covered with several centimetres of water. Today the tide reached 100 cm, a height that in any case causes difficulties in the Square, especially along the Procuratie Vecchie. The aspect that must not be underrated and that the Associazione Piazza San Marco has often emphasised, is that even with these tides that do not ‘make news’, the St Mark’s area and a good part of St Mark’s Square end up under water with relative difficulties not only for residents and tourists but also for businesses. This problem will not be resolved with the Mose system in operation, either, which is why the Associazione Piazza San Marco will shortly be presenting a specific dossier on this delicate subject.
