Under the Tower it shows the old Venice
The remainings of an ancient pavement of bricks laid in “spina di pesce” (herringbone pattern) and some wall-fragments have been found under the actual pavement of Piazza San Marco during the ongoing works of stabilizing the basement of the Campanile (the clock tower in Piazza San Marco). Perhaps they are part of the former “ospizio Orseolo”, a kind of hostel for pilgrims and travellers, built in 975. The news was given during a press conference in June.
